Members in attendance: Essie, Molly, Eliot, David J, Rob, David P, Mark R, George, Paul

Honored guests: Christine, Mark H, Jenna, Will, and Pete. Both to those who visited us for the first time and to those who have returned to visit us, we in Gopher Toastmasters say thanks very much for your interest in our club and for providing your comments. We look forward to seeing you again.

David P served as business chair.

Rob served as timekeeper / grammarian and provided the word of the day: “aegis.”

Molly served as Table Topics master. Christine answered a question on encounters with celebrities. Mark R was asked to choose one of a few familiar acronyms and give it a whole new use; he chose “NBC.” Paul answered a question on what age other than his current age he would want to be temporarily.

Officers’ reports:
* Sergeant-at-Arms Eliot brought in a new stack of evaluation forms.

* Treasurer Molly reported that dues are due. To those of you who have not paid yet, you know who you are! (Post-meeting follow-up: we got a message from Toastmasters International indicating that we had not submitted our “on-line renewal.” The message said we can meet the early renewal if we submit confirmed dues payments from at least 6 members, of whom at least 3 are renewing members.)

* Education VP Essie noted that there are still several openings for speakers at the May and June meetings. She encouraged members to chat with her at the break or send an e-mail after the meeting if interested in a speaking role.

* President George noted that the next election for officers is at the end of the May. He wants to meet with the current officers as soon as possible to discuss this. George encouraged members to check the District 6 web site for the times and dates of local speech contests. The regional conference is on the 24th and 25th of this month at the Holiday Inn Select in Bloomington. The international convention is in Connecticut the 12th through 15th of August. Our club has proxy votes for both these events. Please contact George if interested in attending any of these events.

Old business
* We revisited the discussion of having David Jansen as the temporary VP of membership, through May (when the next officer elections take place), while David Solberg is unavailable for meetings. This proposal was called to question, and the vote was affirmative. Welcome to this role, David J!

No new business

This ended the business portion of the meeting. We took a break then went on to the speech portion of the meeting.

David J served as Toastmaster. There was one speech this evening.

George gave a speech on “Competent Leadership.” This speech was in fulfillment of Competent Communicator (CC) manual project, “Get Comfortable with Visual Aids,” and is the last project that George needed to complete to apply for the CC award. Eliot gave the spoken evaluation.

Paul served as master evaluator.

Personal announcements: Molly announced that her last game as a Roller Girl takes place on Saturday night the 11th, at Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul.

Essie closed the meeting as jester.

The next meeting is on Monday the 20th of April, at 7:30 pm (NOTE: 30 MINUTES LATER THAN USUAL START TIME), Hennepin Center for the Arts (528 Hennepin), 5th floor.
George has volunteered to take the minutes for that meeting.
The meeting after that, on the 4th of May, will have the usual start time of 7 pm.

Respectfully submitted,
Paul Lubinski

Meeting Minutes March 2, 2009 Meeting

Members in attendance: Essie, Sandy, Molly, Eliot, Rob, David P, Mark R, George, David S, Paul

Honored guests: J.P., Nick, Dave J (previous member of other clubs), and Mark H (former member of Gopher club). Both to those who visited us for the first time and to those who have returned to visit us, we in Gopher Toastmasters say thanks very much for your interest and participation in our meeting. We look forward to seeing you again.

Sandy served as business chair.

Essie served as timekeeper / grammarian and provided the word of the day: "serendipity."

Dave S served as Table Topics master. Essie answered a question on how to help the economy recover. George answered a question on where he'd like to go on vacation. Molly answered a question on President Obama's Blackberry and related security concerns.

Following the reporting of the minutes from the last meeting, honored guest Dave J recommended that the club's web site should indicate where in the Hennepin Center for the Arts our meetings are held, specifically the 5th floor.

Officers' reports:
* Treasurer Molly noted that our bank balance is $273, and that dues are due in April.

* Education VP Essie reported not having heard from Meetup about the proposal for our club to share a membership there with another Toastmasters club that already has a membership. At this point we have to assume that the joint membership will not happen. Question for the club: would we want a membership of our own (estimated cost $72 for 6 months)?

* President George reported placing a copy of the obituary for former member David Pieper on the club's web site. Regarding the club site's link to the District 6 web site, George noted that most of the events currently posted by the District 6 site are outside of the metro area. George warned that any links placed in e-mails to the "gophertm" distribution list might get "eaten."

New business--
* Molly proposed having binders of information on officer duties. There was further discussion on what the information packets could contain, and how we gather the information. Mark R made a motion that each officer should bring to the next meeting (16th of March) some outline of content for the information packet / binder. The motion was passed for a call to question (vote). The vote was affirmative.

* We discussed the options for the meeting on the 20th of April, which is the next time there will be a conflict between our meeting and some other group's quarterly meeting that occupies the room until 7:30 pm. There was a motion to start our meeting at 7:30 that evening. The motion was passed for a call to question (vote). The vote was affirmative: we will start that meeting at 7:30, and will issue a notice to that effect.

This ended the business portion of the meeting. We took a break then went on to the speech portion of the meeting.

Molly served as Toastmaster. There were two speeches this evening.

Rob gave a speech on the history of the Gopher club. David P gave the spoken evaluation.

Honored guest Dave J gave a speech on public transit funding. This speech was in preparation for the presentation he would make at the Government Center on Wednesday the 4th. The speech was also in fulfillment of the "Persuade with Power" project in the Competent Communication manual. George gave the spoken evaluation.

Eliot served as master evaluator.

The vote for outstanding speaker of the evening was a tie!

Announcements:
* Opportunity to hone speaking skills or at least check out other speakers: the meeting of the West Side Speakers' Club on Saturday the 14th of March, at the Uptown Lund's, start time 8:30 or 9 am. (More details at our web site, or district web site, or by e-mail?)
* Essie is having work published in a "Scandinavian Sewing" publication. More info is in her Facebook.
* The memorial service for David Pieper is on Saturday the 7th at 11 a.m. More details, such as location, are in an e-mail being sent by Molly.

Paul closed the meeting as the jester.

The next meeting is on Monday the 16th of March, at 7 pm, Hennepin Center for the Arts (528 Hennepin), 5th floor.

Finally, the Gopher Toastmasters club offers condolences to the loved ones of our former member, David Pieper. Our thoughts of David are filled with gratitude and fond memories.

Respectfully submitted,
Paul Lubinski

Happy 68 Birthday Gopher Toastmasters

Not only will we be celebrating the President's day at our meeting on Monday February 16, 7PM at the Hennepin Center for the Arts (528 Hennepin Ave, Minneapolis MN) but we will also be celebrating the 68th anniversary of the Toastmaster's club. To celebrate, George will be bringing in treats.

Distirct 6 TELI

Five of the officers, Mark B., Sandy, Molly, Paul and George (me) attended the District 6 Toastmasters Education and Leadership Institute Training on February 13. I would personally like to thank all of the officers who took the time to get up early on Saturday morning on Valentine's day to attend the training. Paul, Sandy and George carpooled in and thanks to Paul's directions we got there in record time.

I usually like to think that I am pretty frugal with my money but this training was a real bargain, and I was able to drink at least my $5 worth of Hotel Coffee.

We broke off into separate groups for officer training and then had our choice of three breakout seminars the following hour and two breakout seminars the third hour and then we were all present for the Building a Champion Club, by Lance Miller, the 2005 World Champion of Public speaking winner.

I hope the other officers found this speech and the other seminars to be as inspirational as I did.
